I was commissioned by an Atlanta-based events agency, CRUxHaus, to craft the brand identity for "This Summer," a brand-new annual day festival launching in 2025. The vision was clear: to create a day of learning, connection, and joy that evoked the warm, golden afternoons of late 90s summers – think splashing by the fire hydrant or skipping double-dutch on the baseball court. The challenge was to strike a balance between a retro, nostalgic summer vibe and a contemporary, underground edge. As a novel concept entering the festival scene, the identity needed to be bold, joyful, and unequivocally sun-drenched to make a strong initial impact.

Brand Idea: The Golden Days

To visually articulate the desired "retro summer" atmosphere, I developed an abstract solar symbol as the central motif for the brand. This sun-like logo is animated to rotate, featuring an ink-bleed blobby effect that provides a contemporary and unique feel. This ink-bleed aesthetic was a crucial element in bridging the requested 90s vibe with a fresh, modern feel, giving the brand a distinctive edge. The animation of the sun, with its subtle bleed, creates a fluid and engaging visual experience that immediately captures attention across digital platforms.

Typography & motifs

The ink-bleed effect was meticulously carried through to the typography, ensuring a cohesive and unique visual language across all touchpoints. This treatment on the lettering adds to the tactile, yet digitally enhanced, retro feel. To highlight the festival's workshop-based nature and its diverse offerings, I developed a series of digital stickers for each workshop category. These playful elements are designed to appear as if "slapped" onto promotional materials, adding a sense of fun, immediacy, and accessibility. This flexible system works seamlessly across both digital and physical applications, from social media to large-scale posters.
